Evidence for substructure in lens galaxies?
We discuss whether one should expect that multiply imaged QSOs can be understood with ‘simple’ lens models which contain a handful of parameters. Whereas for many lens systems such simple mass models yield a remarkably good description of the observed properties, there are some systems which are notoriously difficult to understand quantitatively. We argue that at least in one case (B 1422+231) ...
متن کاملProbing Dark Matter Substructure in Lens Galaxies
We investigate the effects of numerous dark matter subhalos in a galaxy-sized halo on the events of strong lensing, to assess their presence as expected from the cold dark matter scenario. Lens galaxies are represented by a smooth ellipsoid in an external shear field and additional cold dark matter subhalos taken from Monte Carlo realizations which accord with recent N-body results. We also con...
متن کاملLens Mapping of Dark Matter Substructure with Vsop-2
Hierarchical clustering models of cold dark matter (CDM) predict that about 5% 10% of a galaxy-sized halo with mass ∼ 10 solar masses (M⊙) resides in substructures (CDM subhalos) with masses ∼ < 108M⊙. To directly identify such substructures, we propose to observe radio continuum emission from multiply imaged QSOs using VSOP-2 with a high angular resolution.
متن کاملThe Lens Redshift and Group Environment for He 0435 - 1223
The redshift of the galaxy lensing HE 0435−1223 is 0.4546 ± 0.0002, based on observations obtained with the Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph 2 (LDSS2) on the Magellan Consortium’s 6.5 m Clay telescope. Hubble Space Telescope/ACS observations of the system also reveal a spiral-rich group of 10 galaxies within 40 of the elliptical lensing galaxy. The redshifts for two of these galaxies were mea...
متن کاملThe new complex gravitational lens system HE 0230 − 2130 ?
We report the discovery of the new gravitational lens system HE 0230−2130, a QSO at redshift z = 2.162 consisting of at least five distinct components. Three of these are clearly lensed images of the QSO, one is most likely the lensing galaxy, while for the fifth component the identity is unclear: It could be a fourth QSO image (if so, then highly reddened), or another intervening galaxy, or a ...
